My Story

Few would cite an experience at age five as being “life-changing,” but for me, this was exactly the case. I was woken in the middle of the night by my father, a mechanic for CP Air, and taken to the company’s hangar at the Vancouver International Airport.

Under the day-glow of the hangar lights, I witnessed the airlines' first Boeing 747 aircraft, just delivered from nearby Boeing Field. It was a moment that solidified my lifelong passion for aviation.

My career path was anything but typical, but I would say it landed me exactly where I was meant to be - supporting people in an industry I love.

Influenced by both parents’ careers with airlines, I sought my first aviation job at age 18, when I started in cargo with Canadian Airlines and quickly moved to the ramp at the Vancouver International Airport. While working for the airlines, I studied Aviation Business Management, working toward my commercial pilot's license.

A fortuitous accident shifted Peter’s focus to the insurance world. After graduating the Insurance Institute of Canada, he found his stride as an adjuster and an advocate for those in need. Peter later consulted to some of Canada’s largest insurance companies, where he honed his insurance expertise.

Now, as Managing Partner of DF Steer, Peter marries his affection for aviation and deep understanding of the insurance world with his desire to empower clients, inspired by his early advocacy days. You’ll often hear Peter say, “I don’t sell insurance, I teach people how to buy it,” a testament to his client-centric approach.

Peter lives in Bragg Creek with his wife and two children. When he’s not working, you can usually find Peter exploring the local mountain biking trails, or landscaping his family acreage. He’s been known to sip scotch and watch hockey – often at the same time.
